Brougham Hall’s popular wartime weekend returns once again with events running from today until Sunday.
Organised by the trustees of the Brougham Hall Charity Trust and the North Lancashire and Cumbria Military Vehicle Trust, there will be displays reflecting British, Commonwealth and American vehicles used by the Allies from 1939 to 1945 — all in full working order.
A spokesman said living history groups will portray personal testimony of those who served both on the Home Front including the Land Army, and those who served in the military in the fields of France, Italy and the Far East.
An audio-visual exhibition will be available portraying the impact of war on Cumbria, as well as an outline of the role of both Brougham Hall and Lowther Castle’s top secret Canal Defence Light School, which was also known as “Monty’s moonlight”.
Andrew Leitch, of the Cumbria Film Archive, has given permission to show the archive film footage portraying all aspects of life in Cumbria during the war.
Admission to the event is free of charge, however donations to the Brougham Hall Charitable Trust will be appreciated.
“Refreshments are available over the weekend. Schools have been informed of the event and are welcome on Friday.
“A live performance from the Bobby Pin Ups, a close harmony trio, will be on Saturday and a service of Remembrance will take place over the Memorial Arch to the 79th Armoured Division at 11am,” the spokesman added.
