Serving the community since 1975, Penrith Lions Club recently held its annual Changeover Night – a time to confirm committee roles for the year ahead and share plans for what is to come.
Tony Cleasby continues as president, supported by Terry Ware as deputy. Mike Parker remains club secretary, with Roger Roberts as treasurer. The team is joined by Derek Storer (Welfare), Helen May (Activities), and Marjorie Lewthwaite (Social).
Helen May was awarded Lion of the Year, recognising her outstanding contributions over the past 12 months.
This is a special milestone for the club, as 2025 marks 50 years of continuous service to Penrith and the surrounding area.
“We’ve got an action-packed calendar of events coming up,” said activities chair, Helen. “All to help raise vital funds so we can continue supporting the causes that matter most to people locally.”
From organising long-time favourites like Santa’s Sleigh and Santa Post to helping out at local events, the Lions have become a familiar and trusted presence in the community.
Last week, members were out with collection buckets at Carlisle racecourse during the Carlisle Bell and Cumberland Plate race meeting. Thanks to the generosity of racegoers, the club raised £449.34 to support local good causes.
The day also provided a chance to catch up with the team from Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland, following the club’s recent £900 donation. A photo presentation was held to mark the occasion.
The Lions’ work is made possible by the dedication of its volunteers — past and present — who give their time, energy and ideas. The club is always keen to welcome new members.
“People often assume Lions is just for retired men — but that’s simply not true,” Helen said. “We welcome everyone — all ages, backgrounds and experience levels.
“If you want to make a difference and meet great people, come and join us!”
Like many voluntary organisations, the club is feeling the impact of rising costs and is exploring new ways to raise funds.
Local businesses are also encouraged to get involved — by hosting a coffee morning, holding a dress-down day, running a quiz night, or offering staff volunteer time.
