Shap shivered in this week’s cold snap as it notched up the coldest minimum temperature in the UK overnight.
On Wednesday, thermometers plunged to – 5.7°C (21.7F) making it the coldest recorded place in the UK between 9am and 9pm, according to the Met Office figures.
Warcop, near Appleby, also recorded the lowest maximum temperature of 1°C (33.8F). Then today, the BBC’s weather presenter Caroline Kirkwood reported that temperatures in Shap had fallen further to minus -8.5C (16.7C).
Forecasters are expecting icy temperatures into next week, with snow warnings also having been issued.
An ice warning remains in place for Cumbria today and Friday.
This morning on the A591 at Wythburn near Thirlmere, Cumbria police reported a road traffic incident with both sides blocked and heavy traffic due to an accident near the church, although the cause has not yet been made public.
