Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service is celebrating International Women’s Day by shining a light on some of the women who go out of their way to make a difference in the communities where they live and work.
Upper Eden-based Abbie Pepper is an on-call firefighter at Appleby fire station where she serves her local community alongside her day job as a global sales manager at a fashion company.
She also volunteers as a first responder with North West Ambulance Service, which is something very close to Abbie’s heart.
Abbie said: “I joined Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service because I believe I could make a difference, supporting our community in blue light emergency response, but also making a difference in fire prevention, educating our communities and working with our schools and local youth groups to raise awareness.
“I learn something new every single day, that’s what keeps it interesting and engaging.
“To any women considering joining the fire service – go for it!
“You get to work alongside brilliant people, and in a culture that values, respects and celebrates women.
“The strength of the team is each individual member – the strength of each individual member is the team.”
