A unique coffee shop and restaurant in an Eden village is on the market for £255,000.

The former railway station at Langwathby was converted into an award-winning restaurant and cafe in 1996, where it has enjoyed a great reputation.

Its owners have decided that now is the time to sell and have put the venue, which is on the Carlisle to Settle line, on the market with Edwin Thompson.

The single-storey sandstone railway station was built in 1876.

A spokesman for Edwin Thompson said: “It has been run as Brief Encounter Coffee Shop & Restaurant benefitting from the regular Carlisle-Settle users as well as an established reputation and repeat visitors.”

The main building provides a restaurant, coffee shop, cake stand and gift area with associated kitchen and toilets.

The property can be accessed from both the platform side where there is disabled/level entry and from the car park.

Brief Encounter Coffee Shop & Restaurant currently opens from 1st March until mid-December, offering breakfast dishes, scones, cakes, sandwiches, hot snacks and full meals including local dishes.

Named after the classic 1945 film starring Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson, during lockdown, it offered a takeaway service.

The premises also carries a licence allowing the sale of alcohol when ordered with a meal.

A next-door single-storey building was previously used as a gift shop and is currently being used for storage.

The southern end of the site provides dedicated car parking and a timber workshop/garage premises.
