Plans have been submitted for a new convenience store in Penrith which could create up to 20 new jobs.
Full planning permission is sought by North Lakes Estates Limited for the erection of a new convenience store including associated operations on land at Carleton Hall Farm, Penrith.
Alongside the erection of the store, there are plans for the formation of a new access on to Carleton Avenue, including the reconfiguration of the existing access to Carleton Hall Farm. A new footpath is also proposed between the accesses and the installation of a pedestrian island in the middle of Carleton Avenue opposite pedestrian steps connecting the new footpath to the site.
There will be 19 car parking spaces, one disabled parking space, two cycle-parking bays, and a loading area. However, it is hoped people who live locally will walk or cycle to the shop to do small shops for day-to-day products.
A spokesman said: “In addition to the environmental and health benefits of reducing reliance on cars, the convenience store would result in job creation. Advice from national retailers is that a store of this size and nature would result in the creation of up to 20 jobs including a mixture of full and part-time roles with various roles and responsibilities and enhanced career progression.
“Convenience stores also provide a wider and social role by meeting the needs of the disadvantaged, socially excluded and elderly, particularly those with a lack of mobility who cannot access more distant shops. Many national retailers, including the retailer who has already expressed an interest in this store, become an important part of their communities and actively contribute to them both financially and socially.”
