New 40mph speed restrictions are set to be introduced to act as “buffer zones” to help protect a number of Eden villages.
The zones will be introduced around villages including Blencowe, Bampton, Catterlen, Croglin, Culgaith, Greystoke and Melmerby.
At Alston, a 40mph speed limit is to be introduced on the A686 at Lowbyer, while there is also going to be an extension of the 40mph in the vicinity of Castletown Bridge (M6 overpass) on the outskirts of Penrith following the installation of a new footway.
New 30mph speed restrictions will also be introduced at Helton and Garrigill following concerns about traffic speeds within the villages and at Carleton Brow, Penrith, following the introduction of street lighting in that area.
There is also going to be an extension of the 30pmh zones at Culgaith and Melmerby.
The aim is to get them introduced before the end of the financial year, a meeting of Cumbria County Council’s local committee for Eden was told.
Claire Driver (Lab, Alston and East Fellside) said: “A lot of these works have been things that the communities have been lobbying for for years.”
She said it had been “delightful” to attend parish council meetings and hear the positive feedback about the new speed limits.
“It makes a huge difference to the lives of our communities and also a huge difference to them feeling that their voices have really been heard,” she added.
