Police are appealing for information following a serious road traffic collision yesterday on the A6 at Clifton.
The incident involved a horse, the rider and a car.
Emergency services were called at around 2.50pm following the collision, which involved a Land Rover.
The 20-year-old female rider was taken to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough, via air ambulance.
Her injuries are at this time serious but stable.
A vet attended the scene and the horse was put down.
The driver of the Land Rover, a man in his 70s from Penrith, was uninjured.
The road was closed until just before 9pm while emergency services attended the scene.
Enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances of the incident.
