Young farmers from across Cumbria gathered on Saturday at Yanwath Woodhouse Farm, near Eamont Bridge, to take part in their annual fence erecting competition.
The event took place by permission of the Fisher family, who have hosted it for many years, while the materials were donated by T. W. Relph and Sons, of Yanwath, who are also long term supporters of the competition.
A sunny start to the day ensured the five teams competing were able to make a good start on the task of erecting a 30-metre stock proof boundary fence. This proved a challenging task and one which called for the young farmers to use all their skill and determination to complete the work within the allotted two and a half hours.
The judge, Richard Fisher, spent a good deal of time alongside stewards Chris Roe and Will Knipe looking at every aspect of the finished fences.
After much deliberation, first place was awarded to the Kent Estuary team — for the seventh year running — made up of Ben Handley, Sam Howard and James Walmsley.
Second place went to the Furness YFC team of Jack Fisher, Luke and Alex, with Penrith’s Mark Fisher, Tom Kirk and Ellie Fisher placed third. Emily Conway, Rob Beaty and Robert Benn, of Egremont YFC, were highly commended in fourth place and Billy Sibbald, Stephen and Ryan were placed fifth for Drigg.
Richard Fisher presented the trophy and certificates to the winning teams and commended all the teams on their hard work. Kent Estuary thanked the judge and stewards, the Fisher family for hosting the competition and T. W. Relph for their continued support, which enables the young farmers to use top grade materials.
The top three teams will compete at the northern area field day, which will be hosted by Cumbria YFC on 14th June, 2025.
