The town hall in Penrith is flying its Union Flag at half-mast today in honour of Sir Captain Tom Moore, who died yesterday, aged 100.
Captain Sir Tom inspired the nation during the first lockdown and raised more than £32m for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his garden before his 10th birthday.
He was admitted to hospital this week with pneumonia and coronavirus.
His daughters Hannah and Lucy said in a statement: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dear father, Captain Sir Tom Moore.
“We are so grateful that we were with him during the last hours of his life; Hannah, Benjie and Georgia by his bedside and Lucy on FaceTime.
“We spent hours chatting to him, reminiscing about our childhood and our wonderful mother. We shared laughter and tears together.”
Yesterday, Lake District brand Herdy made him a Herdy Hero and created a poster people can download with one of his sayings on it.
Eden District Council said: “We’re flying the town hall’s Union Flag at half-mast today in honour of the incredible Captain Sir Tom Moore who sadly died yesterday.
“Captain Sir Tom Moore, a World War Two veteran, inspired the nation last year.”
