Flood alerts are still in place across Cumbria and train passengers are advised not to travel until at least noon today as Storm Christoph batters the region.

Two flood warnings – for Keswick Campsite and River Eden at Carlisle, Rickerby Park, Swifts and Stoneyholme golf courses – remain in place.

People are warned that flooding is expected and immediate action is required.

There are still 15 flood alerts – meaning flooding is possible and people should be prepared for:

  • Lower River Eden

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for ice this morning for much of Cumbria, following the clearance of heavy rain and in places snow.

Train firm Northern has advised customers across the North West of England not to travel before noon today.

It said increasingly poor conditions meant a number of routes have experienced issues with flooding, and several have seen closures and significant disruption.

Anyone who needs to make essential journeys should allow extra time for travel and to check carefully before setting off as the situation evolves.

As the rain continues to fall and flood waters rise flooding is becoming more widespread and colleagues across the rail industry are working hard to deal with issues as they arise, it said.

Northern worked alongside Network Rail throughout the night to prepare as many rail services as possible to resume today.

The Carlisle-Hexham-Newcastle service is cancelled.

Services are running on the Barrow-Carlisle, Leeds-Carlisle, Windermere-Preston will not have a service until at least 9am and passengers are advised not to travel.

No road transport will be provided.
