An investigation has been launched after unscrupulous fly-tippers dumped a substantial amount of commercial waste at a village’s recycling centre.
Environmental health officers at Eden District Council are looking into the disposal of a freezer, shop shelving, cardboard and packaging that was strewn across the bring site at Plumpton.
“We were made aware through social media posts that a substantial amount of commercial waste had been illegally dumped at our Plumpton recycling centre,” said a council spokesman.
“Our waste contractor was quickly deployed and the majority of the waste was cleared on Monday with the remaining, bulkier items being removed the next day.
“As with all incidents of fly tipping, we are currently investigating this matter with a view to bringing a swift prosecution of those responsible,” added the spokesman.
“We ask that traders dispose of their commercial waste responsibly. We also encourage all users of our recycling centres to make use of the facilities in an appropriate and respectful way.”
The spokesman said: “Some people want to avoid paying business charges to get rid of their rubbish and they are either dumping in the countryside or at our recycling facilities.
“There has been a prolonged issue at Plumpton. You will always get unscrupulous builders who have large quantities of material, that is not domestic waste, and are dumping it in inappropriate locations.”
