Kirkby Stephen town councillors received a thought-provoking presentation from two residents about a project to resettle a single refugee family in the area.
A town council spokesman said: “The insecurity experienced by vulnerable people living in refugee camps was particularly emphasised.”
The meeting heard that the council wholeheartedly supported the group’s application to the Home Office as a Community Support Group to resettle a family with refugee status in Kirkby Stephen.
The involvement of Caritas Salford in the role of lead sponsor was noted, as was the fact that the speakers were confident of raising the £9,000 required to deliver the project.
However, town councillor Mike Walker felt it would be inappropriate for the council to use funds raised from tax payers for the project but felt the council should support it.
It was agreed that council chairman Paul Richardson would write a letter of support.
