A sinkhole has opened up in Appleby town centre with urgent investigations taking place today.
The half-a-metre-deep hole appeared in the middle of the road on the corner of Boroughgate and Bridge Street close to the town’s historic Low Cross landmark.
Appleby mayor Gareth Hayes said: “Police have looked into it and been on it ever since”.
Cumbria County Council is involved in the investigations and operatives were on-site to guide traffic past the void on yesterday with the road closed for a period in the evening. The road was open this morning but a further closure is expected.
Mr Hayes added: “United Utilities understand there is pipework underneath and want to ensure it’s not a collapsed drain which would need more excavation. If it’s just the hole it should be fixed within 24 hours.”
