Emergency services were called to Alston after a metal detectorist believed they had found a piece of ordnance.
A bomb disposal team was called and people were urged not to go near the area of the Brewery and cordons were put in place.
However, an update from Cumbria police around four hours after the ordnance had been found said it was analysed and found to be a piece of metal, of no danger.
A spokesman said: “Thank you to all for your patience.”
