An outpouring of grief on social media has greeted the sad news that a “true Penrith character” has died after being struck by a car.
Milo the Penrith cat was well known for wandering in and out of the town’s shops and businesses and his owners said they were “absolutely gutted” following his death on Wednesday afternoon.
They said in a message on Facebook that he had to be put down at the vets as he was in a lot of pain.
Milo has his own Facebook page where his feline adventures have been chronicled and it has a large following.
It shows pictures of him curled up on the seats of mobility scooters, waiting patiently to gain entry to WCF laid flat out in the Morrisons petrol station shop “as if he owned the place”, celebrating Christmas or sitting among the Easter eggs in the supermarket.
Dozens of sympathy messages have been posted on social media from those who had liked his Facebook page.
His owners thanked everyone who had ever looked out for him or let him wander around in their shops, garages, houses, gyms and restaurants in a message on Facebook.
