The Flusco household waste recycling centre is currently closed due to localised flooding at the site.

Westmorland and Furness Council said flooding at the site entrance has meant it had to be closed to the public, but it would reopen once the flooding had subsided.

An updated weather warning for heavy rain and high winds has been issued for Cumbria for today and Thursday.

Storm Gerrit is set to hit the North West and Scotland.

The Met Office has issued the yellow weather warning for rain for between 3am to 6pm today.

It said: “Outbreaks of heavy rain will move northeastwards across northern England and southern Scotland during Wednesday.

“Across the warning area 20-30mm of rain is expected to accumulate quite widely. Over higher ground of the Pennines, Lake District and Southern Uplands, 40-60mm is likely during this period with as much as 70-90mm in a few locations.

“Strong winds will likely exacerbate any impacts from the rain. Snow is also likely for a short time across higher ground, although this will quickly turn to rain.”

What to expect

  • There is a slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses
  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a small chance that some communities will become cut off by flooded roads
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life

A yellow weather warning is also in place for wind between 6pm and 3am.

The Met Office said: “Through Wednesday evening, a spell of very severe gales is expected to sweep east and northeast across the Celtic and Irish Sea to produce gusts of 50 to 60mph in parts of west Wales and North West England.

“There is the potential for gusts reaching 65 or 70mph around exposed coasts and over high ground. Heavy, squally showers will accompany these strong winds. The winds will ease later in the night.”

What to expect

  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely
  • It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves
  • Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is possible
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely
