Drivers using the A66 between Warcop and Brough can expect safer, smoother journeys after improvement work is carried out to the road surface over the coming months.
National Highways will be undertaking essential resurfacing work between Sandford junction and Brough junction from Tuesday, 29th August.
The work is expected to take six weeks and during this period a section of the A66 will be temporarily affected to ensure the safety of workers and the public.
Full closures will take place overnight between Sandford and Brough junctions, from 8pm to 6am, from Sunday, 3rd September to Thursday, 7th and Sunday, 10th September to Thursday, 14th.
During these, heavy goods vehicles are advised to follow the diversion route via the A1, A6 and M6. Diversion routes will be clearly signposted. Smaller vehicles may choose to use the local network roads around the closure points, leaving the A66 at Sandford junction or the Brough junction with the A685.
For the majority of the six-week scheme, this stretch of the A66 will remain open to traffic under a convoy system between 8pm and 6am.
National Highways project manager Paul Clark said: “Safety is always our top priority, and this work will create safer journeys for road users for many years to come. While this important work is taking place, we will keep disruption to a minimum by working overnight but we advise road users to allow extra time for their journeys and check their route before setting off.
“We’re conscious that this work is happening within close proximity of our ongoing work to the Great Musgrave bridge. To ensure that drivers are seamlessly guided along the appropriate diversion routes, we will be implementing comprehensive signposting measures”.
