Six lorries have been found by police to be flouting the HGV ban through Kirkby Stephen.
Officers from Eden’s neighbourhood policing team co-ordinated a day of action on the A685 around Brough and Kirkby Stephen following complaints raised about vehicles contravening the 18T weight limit yesterday.
Eden police said: “We worked with VOSA, our north collision reduction officer and police volunteer on the operation.”
In total, 43 vehicles were stopped. Nine HGVs were found to be using the road legitimately but six were not and were issued with traffic offence reports.
Eden police added: “A report was also issued for a tachograph offence and a graduated fixed penalty was issued to a foreign driver for using his mobile phone.
“VOSA issued a prohibition notice to an HGV with the cord exposed on the front axel. Two trailers were also seized due to totalling over 13 faults including brakes and brake lights. “
These offences compromise the safety of all road users and reducing collisions is a priority of Cumbria police.
“We will continue to target this route and those who show disregard for the weight limit. In particular, one haulage company repeatedly attempted to breach the restriction and lied to officers when stopped. This will be followed up with the firm.”
