Primary schools closure update

A number of primary schools across the county will not open for face-to-face lessons with pupils until later this month.

Cumbria County Council asked the Government to allow primary schools to defer fully opening their premises to youngsters, switching to online learning for the majority and allowing children of key workers and vulnerable children into school.

However, the Government refused.

Last night, many schools took to social media to inform parents and carers that they would be closing for emergency inset days today to prepare or closing until later this month.

Here is the latest list from Cumbria County Council, but parents and carers should contact their individual schools in the usual way for the latest updates.

  • Shap Primary School Penrith

School is partially open for this period to vulnerable and key worker children only. Situation will be reviewed weekly.

  • Threlkeld Primary School Keswick

Due to COVID-19 school will only be open to vulnerable and key worker children.

  • Yanwath Primary School, Penrith

The school is closed for an emergency Inset Day due to COVID-19. Is due to reopen tomorrow, according to the county council website.

  • Crosby Ravensworth School

Closed due to staff shortages. Due to reopen on Monday, January 18.

  • Lowther Endowed School Penrith

Due to staff shortage, school will reopen on January 11.

Around the rest of the county:

  • Bishop Harvey Goodwin School, Carlisle

School closed for an Emergency Inset Day, reopening tomorrow.

  • Bowness-on-Solway Primary School

Due to reopen on Monday, January 11. Will be reviewed on Friday.

  • Dane Ghyll Community Primary School Barrow-In-Furness

Due to reopen tomorrow.

  • Ewanrigg Junior School Maryport

Closed until January 18.

  • Great Corby Primary School

Staff shortages due to Covid-19. Due to reopen tomorrow.

  • Irthington Village School

Due to reopen tomorrow.

  • Kirkbride Primary School

Due to reopen on January 18.

  • Levens School, Kendal

Due to reopen tomorrow.

  • Longtown Primary School

Due to reopen tomorrow.

  • Moresby Primary School

Issue with heating system means it will reopen tomorrow.

  • Norman Street Primary School, Carlisle

Due to reopen tomorrow.

  • Petteril Bank School, Carlisle

Due to Inset day closure for coronavirus partial closure planning Closed until tomorrow, where it will only be open to children of critical workers and those classed as vulnerable.

  • Scotby Primary School

Emergency Inset Day today. Due to open tomorrow.

  • St Bega’s Primary School, Holmrook

School open tomorrow for children of keyworkers and vulnerable children only. Reopens fully on January 18.

  • Thomlinson Junior School Wigton

Reopens tomorrow.

  • Victoria Infant and Nursery School, Workington

Due to staffing levels, will reopen on Wednesday.

  • Victoria Junior School, Workington

School only open to key workers’ children and vulnerable pupils from Wednesday.
