Police are warning drivers after near misses and speeding in areas of roadworks on the A66 at Warcop.
Highways England are carrying out resurfacing roadworks on the A66 at Warcop which will run for several weeks.
The works will take place from 8pm onwards Sunday to Thursday and are under the control of traffic lights and a convoy system.
To ensure the safety of motorists as well as the staff working within the roadworks, a 30mph restriction is in place.
Officers from Cumbria Police Mobile Support Group will be assisting Highways England by monitoring and enforcing the speed restrictions to maintain the safety of everyone using the A66 through the roadworks.
Sergeant Lee Hill, from the Mobile Support Group, said: “The workers at the site have reported a number of near misses from vehicles driving through the red lights and ending up head-on with the convoy vehicles.
“They have also reported a large number of vehicles ignoring the 30mph temporary limit. This is unacceptable and places the staff working there at serious risk of injury.
“As this is placing their staff at risk, we will be assisting with unmarked vehicles and anyone caught ignoring the traffic lights or speed limits will be prosecuted.
“We are asking motorists to adhere to the posted speed limits. The workforce may not always be visible but motorists who are exceeding the posted speed limit are placing everyone’s safety at risk.”
