Plans are afoot for a Queen’s platinum jubilee beacon to be lit on Nine Standards, near Kirkby Stephen, in June.
The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors is organising an anchor chain of 43 beacons across all four nations of the UK and had sought the support of Kirkby Stephen Town Council for the Nine Standards’ beacon.
A town council spokesman said they had been approached directly by two members of the public who felt that Tailbridge Hill, near Nateby, would be a better location, as concerns had been raised about the impact of a beacon on ground-nesting birds.
However, councillors preferred the idea of the beacon at Nine Standards, subject to landowner’s consent being obtained and the concerns which had been raised being addressed.
Volunteer members of Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team had already been approached to seek their support with the process, the meeting was told.
