Plans for a new gym in Penrith have been given the go-ahead.
Kenneth Worth, of Penrith, applied for permission to transform a redundant building at the rear of the Cumberland & Westmorland Herald building into a gym, plus strength and training centre,
Mr Worth applied to Eden Council for permission to change the use of the building which is at the rear of the King Street-based Herald office, but is accessed via Friargate.
There are no proposals to alter the building externally, and the only change inside will be the addition of two toilets.
“The intention is to give the internal walls and floor a facelift to facilitate ambient gym conditions,” an accompanying planning document said.
The storage shed, which is owned by RHM (Cumbria), has been leased to Strength and Fitness Gym Ltd. It is is one of a group of buildings behind the Herald offices which are a mixture of different sizes and materials which have been linked together in a piecemeal way over time.
The King Street frontage comprises a two-storey slate roofed building between two three storey older buildings, the one on the left side being the listed Lounge Bar.
Part of the three-storey building to the right is also occupied by Herald offices.
None of this formed part of the change of use planning application and will not change.
The application was determined by Eden Council under its delegated planning powers.
