A field in an Eden village could become a permanent site for camping and caravans after a temporary one proved successful.
Eden District Council has received a planning application for 1.6 hectares of agricultural land opposite the family-run Moor House Farm.
The farm, run by Mark Mawson, covers 850 acres with 340 dairy cows, 580 young stock and 700 breeding ewes.
A mile west of the village, it is located down an unclassified road off the B6261, sitting between the national parks of the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales.
The site would have a maximum of 30 pitches and space for six touring caravans and be open between March and October.
Agents representing the applicant have told council planners that the farming enterprise is successful but due to the ongoing reduction in Basic Payment Scheme subsidy and the location, the farm is exploring further sources of income which will also benefit the public and neighbouring village.
Agents said: “A temporary campsite has previously been run at the site under permitted development rights. The campsite proved very popular and successful, and there was a significant amount of positive feedback.
“The campsite also provided an additional income which is essential for the longevity and success of the farm business as a whole.
“The campsite will bring economic benefits to the local area by increasing the footfall and tourism to cafes, pubs, shops and other facilities and amenities in the local area, especially in the nearby village of Orton.”
