A Penrith butchers and deli has won a prestigious national award.
The Chopping Block, on Two Lions Square, has been named as Best New Butchery Business of 2020 in the awards, now in their 26th year.
Chris Clough opened The Chopping Block in June 2019.
He said: “We’re thankful and humbled to be recognised in these prestigious awards, especially against such talented competition.
“As a young independent business, it’s been a tough first 18 months for us.
“We’re incredibly lucky to have been supported from day dot by the strong community in Penrith and Cumbria.
“Of course, you hope to win but we hadn’t dared think about it! It wouldn’t have been possible without my entire team. Their hard work and whole hearted belief in what we’re trying to build here is irreplaceable.
“And of course, the support of my wife, boys and parents to keep pushing on no matter what. Thank you to everyone who has supported us – I can’t quite believe we’ve done it!”
Organised by Meat Trade Journal, the Butcher’s Shop of the Year Awards celebrate independent butchers and the work they do.
Thirteen awards were presented during this year’s virtual ceremony last night following a significant number of entries.
When asked what’s next for him and his team, Chris said “Well it looks like I’ll need to plan a celebration when we’re allowed to get together again!”
The Chopping Block is currently open Tuesdays to Saturdays and offers a home delivery service for the local community.
