Penrith is showing its appreciation for the armed forces as it appoints a new champion and highlights support for military personnel past and present.
The Armed Forces Day flag is being flown at Penrith Town Hall this week ahead of Armed Forces Day on Saturday.
Armed Forces Day is an annual event, providing the nation with a dedicated day where people can come together to show their appreciation and support of members of the Armed Forces past and present, including currently serving troops, service families, reservists, veterans, members of the ex-service community and cadets.
Councillor Michael Eyles was recently elected as Eden District Council’s Armed Forces Champion. He said: “As a former member of the Royal Air Force, I was honoured to have been nominated to be the Armed Forces Champion for Eden Council.
“I am conscious of the very big shoes I have to fill in succeeding Councillor John Thompson, who did a great job in that role.
“I look forward to helping celebrate our military, especially those veterans who now play such a vital part in our civilian community.
“We are always delighted to proudly fly the flag to celebrate Armed Forces Day, which symbolises the contribution the Armed Forces have and continue to make to our country.”
Eden District Council is a partner in the Carlisle and Eden Forces Link project, which offers support for the ex-service community throughout Carlisle and Eden districts.
The project aims to improve links between local and national support organisations and those members of the local ex-service community who need that help.
Project coordinator, Richie Hinson, is an Army veteran who has a good understanding of the challenges and issues that some members of the ex-service community can face.

Richie can provide further information on support available, lunch and breakfast clubs, volunteering and offering a service or opportunity.
Richie is also currently offering weekly walks in Penrith on Wednesdays, starting at 10am from Sainsbury’s. The new weekly walking group, called Forward Step, is open to veterans and families in the Penrith area.
The walks take between 45 to 60 minutes and the pace is dictated by the group, so all abilities are welcome.
