
A multi-agency emergency services training exercise was held at Warcop yesterday.
Emergency services staff were responding to a simulated train crash.
Members of Cumbria Young Farmers acted as live casualties aboard the train with make-up effects depicting head injuries, loss of limbs in traumatic amputation, broken bones, paralysis, cardiac arrest and deaths.
Appleby fire crew was first on the scene of the major incident exercise, which are run to co-ordinate consistent joint emergency response to major and complex incidents with multiple casualties/fatalities.
The Appleby pump and wild fire Unimog were first on scene, closely followed by Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service crews from Kirkby Stephen, Shap and Penrith. Also taking part were Eden police, British Transport Police, Network Rail incident officers, North West Ambulance Service, Appleby and District Community First Responder Group and Penrith and District Community First Responders.
The complex multi-agency exercise helps to develop the practice and procedures of Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and supports the development of safe systems of work on the ground whilst also enhancing national resilience.
