Sixteen mountain rescue volunteers from the Penrith and Kirkby Stephen teams were involved in the recovery of a man’s body from the fells above Haweswater on Wednesday.
The North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust contacted the Penrith team around 10am following a report of a collapsed male in the Kidsty Howes area.
As the Penrith volunteers were travelling to the scene they were told the Great North Air Ambulance Service had been able to get to the casualty, but that this was now a fatality.
The Kirkby Stephen team were called to help and six members assisted with the long stretcher carry back to the road, which also allowed the air ambulance to return to service.
The incident lasted for four hours 25 minutes.
