Volunteers who run Lazonby’s outdoor swimming pool have received a major funding boost from a local firm.

Bakery company Bells of Lazonby has agreed to be the main sponsor of the volunteers’ appeal to modernise the pool.

Appeal organisers Ann and Dave Farrington said: “It is fantastic news that Bells have agreed to provide £5,000 toward the campaign.

“This will help enormously towards the goal of raising £22,500, but we still need the support of other people if we are to carry out the much-needed repair and upgrading work.”

The work will entail relining the pool and installing a modern filtration system.

Bells, which was founded in 1946, have supported the pool since it opened in 1964.

Tim Conder, the firm’s managing director, said: “We are delighted to reaffirm our support for the Lazonby pool, which has been a fantastic facility for the village and local area for 60 years and we are sure will continue to be long into the future.”

Lazonby pool was originally built in 1964 following a fundraising campaign by John Hume, the headmaster of Lazonby School. One former pupil still remembers having to carry bricks across to the site!

The pool volunteers have raised funds for improvements before, for example to build a changing room and showers for the disabled, but the current campaign will see the whole pool system able to continue for many years to come.

Stuart St John, chair of the pool, said: “It will be great to bring the pool up to date because it is an essential hub, especially for youngsters and families.

“It also supports many different groups. For example, five village schools have held their swimming lessons here this year and the pool has hosted events for local clubs and groups including Mencap, scouts, beavers and cubs and church groups, as well as adult keep fit and water polo sessions. We also welcome many visitors to the pool each year, both from within Cumbria and further afield.”

A Crowdfunder has been started which has raised just over £6,000 of the £22,500 target.
