HGVs have been banned from using two Eden bridges because they could cause a danger to the public.
Emergency orders have been put in place for Ousenstand Bridge on the C3057 near Temple Sowerby and Cliburn Mill Bridge on the C3047, banning 18-tonne trucks from using them.
The temporary orders have been put in place by Cumbria County Council “due to the likelihood of danger to the public and potential damage to the bridge structure”.
The orders may continue for up to 18 months, and affects the bridges for about 18m either side of their centre lines. The authority said the orders were likely to be made permanent.
HGV drivers who would normally use Oustenstand Bridge are advised to use the unrestricted sections of the C3057, the C3047 at Bolton and the A66 at Kirkby Thore.
