Emma Smalley and Terry Barlow, directors of Alpacaly Ever After CIC with the alpacas and llamas at Basecamp.

Volunteers are urged to help plant over 200m of hedgerows at Basecamp North Lakes and Alpacaly Ever After in Eden.

Friends of the Lake District, Ullswater Catchment Management CIC and Alpacaly Ever After CIC is co-ordinating the planting.

Events will be held on October 22 from 9.30am to 3.30pm and October 29 from 9.30am to 3.30pm.

Jack Ellerby, projects officer at Friends of the Lake District, said: “There’s nothing more magical on a crisp winter’s day walking along a hedgerow as flocks of fieldfares, redwings and thrushes burst out from the berry laden shrubs, feeding themselves up for the spring breeding season ahead.

“We are delighted to be able to help the Alpacaly Farm make a start on planting up their 4,000 metres of new native hedgerows to provide new wildlife habitats.

“We’ll have a mix of volunteers including local children, the farm’s volunteer gardening team, and the friends’ volunteer supporters. Many hands make light work, so please do book to come along and lend a hand!”

Emma Smalley ,of Alpacaly Ever After and Basecamp North Lakes, said: “We are so delighted that Friends of the Lake District will be helping us take on our huge hedge-planting mission this winter!

“We are determined to ensure that Basecamp has the greatest possible environmental and community impact, and the hedge planting days will be such a great contribution towards our goals. We are excited to meet all those who are interested in getting involved and we promise a very warm welcome (plus coffee and cake and alpacas!)”

Basecamp North Lakes is a farm shop, cafe and activity site just off the A66 between Penruddock and Troutbeck.

Set in 155 acres with its own lake, it champions sustainability, low food miles and innovative rural enterprise, and is also home to Alpacaly Ever After, an award winning social enterprise and their herd of over 200 alpacas and llamas as well as a community garden.

This volunteer event is open to anyone aged 16 or over. Children are also welcome with adult supervision. Larger groups of younger people, such as school parties, may also be able to be accommodated. Email kay-andrews@fld.org.uk to enquire about bringing a large group to this event.
