Has Borrowdale Banksy struck in Cumbria again?

New images of another mysterious ‘Borrowdale Banksy’ sculpture near Kirkby Stephen have surfaced online.

It could be the latest of several artworks created by an unknown artist in Cumbria, who first started creating the sculptures in hard-to-find locations in May 2021.

The newest structure appears to be made of stone rather than slate and was found on Little Asby Common, prompting some to claim it is just a copy of the original artworks.

John Lees, a walker from Lytham St Annes who was visiting the area, shared some photos of the unusual creation on Facebook.

He said: “I cannot take credit for finding it. A friend found it while walking on the common and put a photo to friends on Facebook.

“My wife and I have a caravan on Chapel Farm Caravan Park, so we are here regularly. It was interesting to see how much of a talking point it has become so quickly, quite controversial.”

He added that Sunbiggin Tarn could be viewed through the centre of the artwork.

The very first three slate sculptures were discovered on Castle Crag, Raven Crag and the third just above Warnscale Bothy and residents were quick to dub the unknown artist as the Borrowdale Banksy.

The first sculpture was discovered by photographer and professional mountaineering instructor Carl Halliday, who did not wish to share the location of the sculpture, due to it only being accessible to experienced climbers.

At the time, the Lake District National Park Authority said that while it was aware of the work, the artist responsible remained a mystery.

The identity of the artist is still unknown, but the complex nature of the designs and the skill required to create the free-standing circles from thin slabs of local slate suggest he or she is a professional.

It has even been suggested the Borrowdale Banksy could be a dry-stone waller.

If you are the Borrowdale Banksy, we’d love to chat with you and we’re happy to keep your identity a secret.

If you’re not Cumbria’s Banksy, but know who made the structure, we’d also love to hear from you! Contact us at news@cwherald.com
