The Penrith Booths store becomes only the second in the country to open a new style of café which harks back to the origins of the high-end supermarket chain.
Booths was initially launched as a café in 1847 when tea dealer Edwin Henry Booth opened his first shop, The China House.
The new 1847 café, which is situated on the ground floor of the Penrith store, will run alongside the café located on the first floor of the supermarket.
Alongside tea and coffee, 1847 also serves a selection of open sandwiches, sharing platters, freshly baked pastries, handmade cakes and locally made patisseries.
It opened to customers for the first time today.
“We are looking to promote the best Booths products, focusing on products from the region, using the best local produce you can buy in store,” said Ann Sherratt who spearheaded the project.
“Freshly ground coffee and a great blend. We roast our own coffee beans.
“We are not doing cappuccinos and lattes but you can get a cafetiere and people can order our own label loose leaf tea.”
The 1847 café will be open between 9am and 5pm Monday to Saturday and 10am until 4pm.
