Appleby’s King George V playing field, which has been plagued by problems with dog fouling, will be included in a £37,500 clean up of dog mess across the district.
Eden district councillor for Appleby, Karen Greenwood, said the council has agreed to fund a service for the clean-up across the district.
The additional nearly £40,000 cost has been necessary, she said, because of a few irresponsible dog owners who do not comply with clean-up rules across Eden.
The move was detailed in a written report to Appleby Town Council at its recent monthly meeting.
Also at the meeting, an update on Cumbria County Council issues was given by the town’s representative, Andy Connell.
He made mention of the A66 project, saying the county council is proactive in Highways England’s project for the upgrade of the road, the amount of traffic on which is expected to double in the next 30 years.
Mr Connell added that issues had been raised including creating better provision for HGV vehicles, CCTV all along the route, and a comprehensive corridor for walking, cycling, horse riding and horse-drawn vehicles.
Appleby councillor Martin Stephenson asked if the 30mph limit in Appleby will be extended further out along the new routes intended to access the A66 in the future.
He also expressed concerns about the suitability of the junction between Long Marton Road and Battlebarrow for increased two-way traffic in the proposals.
In other matters a report was submitted to councillors from Cumbria police.
Officers reported that on November 18 a PCSO on foot patrol in Appleby spotted a suspicious white Ford Transit on Battlebarrow and it was later seen parked on the Sands.
Checks were done on the vehicle and three passengers. The vehicle was found to have no valid tax.
Complaints have been received about vehicles parking on double yellow lines outside both Appleby primary and grammar schools, making visibility poor for students.
Appleby officers were busy on the last weekend of November attending Stainmore due to adverse weather.
Multiple vehicles, many stranded overnight in blizzard conditions, were dug out by officers, highways staff and members of the public.
The next meeting of Appleby Town Council will be held in the public hall at 7pm on Wednesday, January 19.
