Quiet Morning, River Lyvennet, near Kings Meaburn by Alan Thompson

Beckstones Art Gallery, at Greystoke Ghyll, near Penrith, is hosting Eden artist Alan Thompson’s latest one-man exhibition.

It is taking place from Saturday, 17th June, to Sunday, 2nd July.

Alan, of Skirwith, and Beckstones have worked together for almost 40 years.

“This latest collection of 45 wonderful new oil paintings is very special,” said a spokesman for the art gallery.

Painting in oils on board, Alan creates beautifully lit, finely painted Lakeland landscapes which have established for him a collector base of literally thousands of Beckstones’ customers in many countries around the world, the spokesman added.

He is said to be amongst the best of his generation and his main life’s work to date has been painting the inspirational landscapes of his beloved Lake District with its dramatic light and changes of seasons, as well as the gentler surroundings of the Eden Valley where he was born and has spent all his life.

A wonderful draughtsman even as a boy, over the years Alan has truly perfected his craft.

His oil paintings with their detail and unerring sense of colour illustrate just how much Alan cherishes the natural world around him, noticing and highlighting details we might otherwise miss — the warm glow of sunlight on a leaf, wild flowers on a riverbank or a glimpse of spring blossom heralding the end of another long winter.

Alan was born near Penrith in 1953 and on leaving school went on to study at Carlisle College of Art.

After gaining a first class honours degree at Leicester in 1976, he was awarded a post-graduate scholarship to the famed Slade School of Art, University College, London, where he studied under Uglow, Freud and Coldstream.

A successful professional career has followed and his biennial exhibition at Beckstones is always much anticipated and attracts collectors from all over the UK and around the world.

He and his wife, Kathryn, have three grown-up children, Robin, Chloe and Holly, and five grandchildren.

There are 45 new paintings in this exhibition and prices range from £495 to £3,750 at the upper end. The exhibition runs from 10am on Saturday, 17th June, to Sunday, 2nd July, at Beckstones Art Gallery, Greystoke Ghyll, near Penrith. For more information telephone 01768 483601. The catalogue of all the paintings can be viewed online at www.beckstonesartgallery.co.uk
