A property developer has announced she is to give up on her dream of rebuilding the iconic Hartside Cafe.
Dawn Dixon, 56, had been operating a catering trailer at the site of the former cafe, which was destroyed by fire in March 2018.
She announced on Facebook that Sunday was going to be her last day at Hartside and it was with a “very heavy heart” that she was having to “let the dream of building Hartside go”.
Hartside Cafe Limited has been registered as a company for two years. Listed as directors are Dawn and her two sons, Rudy and Thomas.
The statement said: “In the last few years many events have conspired against me and my sons, and anyone in business will understand what I mean.
“All I have to say is I have never met so many genuine, lovely, amazing people and we really appreciate your loyalty and support (weather permitting).
“I personally will really miss our regular customers and the incredible vibe of Hartside.
“It has been an honour to be a custodian of such an amazing location and I am genuinely sorry that we could not give you that spectacular cafe in that potholed car park that Hartside deserves.”
The cafe, at 1,903ft (580m) above sea level, was iconic because of its views across southern Scotland and the Lakes and was a mecca for motorcyclists and visitors who came from far and wide.
