An Eden woman has celebrated her 100th birthday.
Kathleen Guy, with many family members, celebrated the milestone with tea and cakes and a card from the Queen.
was born at Scarside Farm, Orton, on 26th September, 1921, the eldest child of Christopher (Kit) and Mary Metcalfe.
She had three brothers — Gilbert (who died in 2012); Harold, who lives at Wharton; and John, of Kirkby Stephen.
She attended Orton School, and after leaving went to work on the family farm.
This was where she met her future husband, Norman, who was employed on a neighbouring farm.
After they married in 1939 they spent the next 74 years together, celebrating their platinum anniversary, and receiving a card of congratulation from the Queen.
They did not quite reach their 75th anniversary, as Norman died in 2014, aged 94.
They had four children together — Brenda, who lives at Appleby; Bryan, who did live at Kirkby Stephen, but died aged 52; Peter, of Penrith; and Terry, who lives in Stockport.
Kathleen now has nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
After their marriage, Norman, who then worked on the railway, moved first to Crosby Garrett and then to Kirkby Stephen, where they settled.
While living at Kirkby Stephen, she regularly attended the Methodist chapel, became a member of the ladies’ group and the Bright Hour of which she was president for many years and she was also a regular attender at Nateby WI meetings.
Kathleen, together with a group of friends, travelled around the county reciting and telling anecdotes in Westmorland dialect, raising funds for local charities.
In 2016, finding the family home too large to manage, she moved to Rampkin House, Appleby, to be nearer Brenda.
