A grade II listed bridge in Askham will be repaired after suffering major damage. The structure has been repeatedly clipped by passing vehicles in recent years and now a large part of one wall has been destroyed.
The historic structure was built in 1897 and has been damaged a number of times in recent years. A spokesman for Westmorland and Furness Council, which is responsible for the bridge, said: “The heritage-listed bridge in Askham is a Westmorland and Furness Council asset which our teams have made safe for public use by installing concrete and plastic barriers. We are planning the recovery of stonework from the water below to determine what can be salvaged and the amount of new stone needed to restore the bridge to its original condition.
“Our schedule of works will be confirmed once consents have been obtained and a contractor procured. We advise the public to continue to drive carefully through the area.”
A schedule of works will be confirmed in due course. The bridge, near the entrance to the Lowther Estate, remains open to traffic.
