The popular Upper Eden Yomp mountain challenge, which was due to take place in June, has been cancelled.
It was to feature both a 20k and 10k running, jogging or walking event, with a mass start for the longer route setting off from Kirkby Stephen Grammar School.
A spokesman for organisers Rotary Club of Upper Eden said: “At the weekly Upper Eden Rotary meeting, discussion centred around the 2023 Yomp. The event has been in the fell running calendar since 1983.
“Organised by Upper Eden Rotary Club based in Kirkby Stephen, its main objective was to put on an event to raise funds for charitable causes and over the years it has raised tens of thousands of pounds.
“It has missed three years since its inception, 2001 due to foot and mouth and 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic.
“This year, due to several factors, such as an ageing Rotary membership, increasing costs for the hire of facilities and also a reduction in the number of people entering since COVID, it was felt that in its present format, it is not sustainable.
“However, this does not mean it won’t be back, plans are in place to look at how it can come back, watch this space.”
Entries for this year’s event, which was due to take place on Sunday, June 4, opened in February, but on Friday organisers posted a statement on Facebook to say that the 2023 event had been cancelled due to operational reasons.
