Upper Eden Eagles soar to new league

Upper Eden RUFC’s women’s team have been promoted ahead of the 2021/2022 season.

Following a long break from rugby due to the coronavirus pandemic, the side’s application process took in past performance and the Upper Eden Eagles have been awarded with a place in the Women’s NC 2 North (West) league.

This new league will provide a challenge for the young side, as they come up against more experienced rivals, including fellow Cumbrian team Workington Zebra Finches, and will see the team travel to clubs across Lancashire, Cheshire and Yorkshire.

Coach Dave Pearson said: ”After such a long break, the team are desperate to get back out there and play full-contact, competitive rugby.

“They’re ready for this next step, and I’m excited to see the ladies step up against tougher competition.”

The Eagles remained unbeaten in their first season but were denied a place at the top of the Women’s Challenge Series (North) League One when the coronavirus pandemic brought the 2020/21 season to an abrupt end, coming as a crushing disappointment to the team who were only two points behind their nearest rivals who they had been set to play in their final game.

Julie Procter was named captain last season, alongside vice captain Lauren Taylor, but the two have not yet had an opportunity to lead the side in a game.

Julie said: “The team are so excited and ready for the next season, and after the constant disappointments of the past 18 months it’s great to have something to look forward to.

“We know this new league is going to test us, especially after such a long break, but we’re a tight, dynamic team and we’re up for the challenge.”

Upper Eden’s Eagles will kick-off the 2021/22 season with a game against Winnington Park Ladies in Northwich on Sunday 2September 26.

Pre-season training has already recommenced and the team are calling for new players to join their training sessions which take place every Wednesday, 7pm at Upper Eden RUFC, Kirkby Stephen.

The women’s side are also seeking sponsorship partners for the 2021/22 season.

Any businesses interested in supporting the Eagles can contact Lucie Barnes to discuss the opportunities available – luciejrbarnes@hotmail.co.uk
