Westmorland League side Eden Valley were thanked for the excellent support they provided after a freak on-pitch incident led to their opening match of the season being abandoned.
Saturday’s match against Ingleton at Penrith’s Frenchfield Sports Centre was halted after an accidental clash of heads between the referee, Georgia Vyse (pictured), and a visiting player, with 65 minutes on the clock.
This left Georgia suffering from dizziness, a badly cut eye and unable to continue. She was taken to hospital, later discharged and must now rest on the sidelines for several weeks.
“Our thoughts are with Georgia for a speedy recovery,” said a Westmorland League spokesman. “She would like to pass on her thanks to Barry (Graham) and Emilie (Brewster) from Eden Valley who took her to hospital and stayed with her until she was discharged.
“Our thoughts also go to the remaining players and management from both clubs for their understanding. The welfare of all players, coaches and match officials will always take priority.”
Eden Valley manager Scott Sowerby said: “Barry (player) and Emilie (a player’s partner) were first on hand to attend to Georgia, ensuring she was OK and received the right treatment,” said Eden’s manager, Scott Sowerby. “We’d like to say a big thanks to Barry and Emilie for reacting quickly to the situation, as well as people from both teams who supported.
“Everyone at Eden Valley wishes Georgia and the Ingleton player a speedy recovery.”
Westmorland League committee members will discuss the outcome of the match at a meeting next month. Ingleton were leading 4-1 when the match was abandoned.
