Penrith Cricket Club’s first team players got their hands on the huge Palace Shield trophy during the final day of a massively successful season.
Both the Palace Shield and Meyler Cup were brought to Tynefield Park by league officials on Saturday and presented before the last match of the campaign, against county rivals Barrow.
“I felt as though I certainly wouldn’t be lifting that shield!” said captain Ali Craig of a huge and historic prize which dates back more than a century.
“It’s nice, and is confirmation that we have had such a good year. There are a lot of teams who would have wanted these trophies, and the fact we’ve got both of them shows how much hard work we’ve put in.
“We always train hard and work hard to reach the goals that we set. Those were the goals that we set and we got there.”
As Craig and team-mates prepare for a well earned break, he hailed the contribution of all squad members.
“Everyone has chipped in. I can think of moments throughout the season where everyone has contributed and their contribution has won games for us. I don’t think I’ve ever been part of a season where everyone’s chipped so much to get results. It’s been excellent to see.”
Meanwhile, club chairman Andy Hall praised Craig’s contribution in his first year as captain.“He can be very proud of all that he’s achieved this season,” said Hall.
“He has proved himself to be a very mature, calm and a totally committed leader of the first team.
“He has led by example, changed the culture of what is a very young side and, individually and collectively, enabled massive progress to be achieved.
“I’d also like to pay tribute to the role of Asher Hart as vice-captain and head coach, together with Greg Cameron and the experienced Nicky Burns.
Their positive influence should not be underestimated.
“After some very tough seasons in the lower reaches of the Northern League, the players have learned how to ‘win’ games of cricket consistently.
“With promotion and the title in the bag, we now focus on implementing our plans for our return to the Northern Premier League.”
