In pictures: Headline-grabbing footballers from 1980s reunite

It was, former Penrith AFC striker Mike Skelton recalled, “a bloody good team”.

Around a dozen ex-players who pulled on the blue shirt during some headline-grabbing FA Cup runs of the early 1980s were reunited at the club’s Frenchfield Park home on Saturday.

Their get-together came almost 40 years to the exact day that non-league underdogs Penrith sprung a cup shock and beat Third Division Chester at their former Southend Road home. Geoff Fell scored, memorably, in the 1-0 first round proper win.

“It follows me with the lads,” Fell told the Herald of THAT goal.

“They just like taking the mickey! Because at the time there was a lot of press coverage, the lead up to the (second round) Doncaster Rovers game and the headlines that would come out from the previous round. It was just good banter, a good laugh.

“It will stay with me for the rest of my life. It’s a fantastic memory. “
