Eden councillors raised no objection to a notice to postpone debate on a proposed £100,000 grant to fund improvements at Penrith Football Club’s stadium at Frenchfield.
The full meeting of the council had been due to discuss the plan, which would see the money spent on capital maintenance and improvements at the Frenchfield site – owned by the council and leased to the club for £4,000 a year.
Under the proposal, the club would draw on the grant for specific projects, rather than receive it as a lump sum.
However, during previous debate on the issue Debra Wicks (Con, Greystoke) alleged the grant would represent “preferential treatment” of the club and claimed it would not be good use of council taxpayers’ money.
It was decided not to pursue the matter further last night because it was felt it would be better to await the outcome of a meeting which had been arranged between the club, the Football Association and council officers to discuss potential investments at Frenchfield.
