A female horse rider has been airlifted to hospital after she was in collision with a Land Rover on the A6 at Clifton this afternoon.
Emergency services were called to the scene of the accident at around 2.50pm at the southern end of the village close to the George and Dragon pub.
Police said that the horse rider, who was in her 20s, was taken to the James Cook Hospital, Middlesbrough, with injuries that were not believed to be life threatening.
Inspector Lee Skelton, Cumbria police’s force incident manager, said the extent of her injuries were not known.
The horse that she was riding had to be destroyed.
The driver of the Land Rover, a man in his 70s, was helping police with their inquiries into how the accident happened.
The road was closed in both directions.
