This week’s edition mentions the Cumberland & Westmorland Herald as part of a segment talking about Alistair’s time at local newspaper Tavistock Times.
He talks of the importance of local newspapers being at the heart of the local community.
Rory, the former MP for the then Penrith and the Border constituency, mentions the Herald as the ‘centre of his constituency’ and is ‘wonderful’.
“Every week it’s doing the stories from the funerals, photos the primary schools from the 1950s, the auction marts and the agricultural fairs and it’s also helping keep the MP and local councillors accountable.”
He said the loss of local newspapers was a massive problem and the pair talk about how democracy suffers as local newspapers miss out on advertising revenue as Google and Facebook target users with adverts.
The Cumberland & Westmorland Herald has been at the heart of the community since 1860. We are part of Cumbria’s only independent newspaper group, owned by Barrnon Media.
