Tributes have been paid to the son of Jim and Vanessa Lowther, who has died aged 21.
The couple, who own Lowther Castle, said Will, their oldest son, was a ‘beautiful soul’.
A statement from the family said: “Each and every person who had the pleasure of knowing and meeting him was deeply touched by him.
“Sadly, during his late teenage years, Will struggled with his mental health. This led him to turn to drugs for escape.
“Despite fighting courageously for years with his inner demons, Will tragically took his own life last week.
“He died in hospital in Manchester with his family by his side.”
William loved to paint and after a foundation art year, he went to pursue his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.
The family said: “His work was creative, personal and showed tremendous talent.”
Will was the next heir but one to Lowther Castle.
A spokesman for the family has asked that their privacy be respected while they grieve the loss of their dearly loved son.
A small, private funeral will be held near the family home in Cumbria in due course.
