Two men were injured and three others arrested after a fight outside a Penrith pub on Saturday night.
Police were called after violence broke out on Burrowgate, near the Pinny, at around 10.20pm.
A 39-year-old man from Penrith sustained a minor injury, a police spokesman said, and a 20-year-old man from Dudley was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle suffering a serious injury.
Officers arrested three men on suspicion of violent disorder – a 21-year-old from Suffolk, a 34-year-old from Cheshire ad a 39-year-old from North Yorkshire.
They have all been released but remain under investigation, the spokesman added.
