Herald staff outside the new office in Middlegate, Penrith

Dear reader,

You’ll have noticed a change to the Cumberland & Westmorland Herald website.

Starting today, we are increasing the amount of content we’re putting online every Friday. It now includes premium content from the print edition, published simultaneously with the paper.

To go with that change, we’re revising the way we charge.

We’ll be charging 40p to read a premium story online – but you’ll only be charged for a maximum of three stories each week, then you’ll have unlimited access.

Rest assured, we will still offer you a great mix of free articles – from road closures to shop openings – we are not asking you to pay for everything.

We are proud of our long heritage – we have served the community for over 160 years now – and like every business, we need to change and want to continue to develop.

Over our long history we’ve changed and modernised and we’re still doing it. That’s why we’re the only independent media company in Cumbria producing weekly newspapers.

You already know how committed we are to the community – our new offices on Middlegate in Penrith are testament to that.

We’re also committed to sticking around, becoming a better business and being able to invest more.

But news isn’t free – our reporters, based in our community, work hard to bring you the latest news and sport. We are a business and we’d like to stay in business, to thrive and grow.

That’s the reason for this change. The way we deliver news to you and the ways we make money are changing, so we’re adapting.

So you can read a mixture of stories online, for a maximum of £1.20 per week. That’s less than a cup of coffee – and will help support your local paper!

You can also support us by picking up a printed newspaper while you are out and about in Eden, taking out a postal subscription or signing up for a digital edition – delivered straight to your inbox.

If you’d like to make sure your local independent newspaper survives and thrives for another 160 years, and if you enjoy a great read about your local area, please support us!

We appreciate your support,

Nicole Regan
