Rest Under The Stars, a collaborative project between Carlisle Cathedral and the city’s Prism Arts, is going on tour.
The installation transformed Carlisle Cathedral this summer into a peaceful spot for stargazing — with deckchairs, scatter cushions and a new bespoke soundscape to listen to as visitors gazed up at the building’s iconic starry ceiling.
Now the summer holidays have come to an end, the project is going on tour, visiting communities within Cumbria, to enable more people to experience this interactive event.
Firstly, the installation will be set up at St Lawrence’s Church, Crosby Ravensworth. Members of the community can visit and experience Rest Under The Stars there until the end of October. Following this, the project will move to St Stephen’s Church, Kirkby Stephen, then on to St Lawrence’s Church, Appleby, throughout November and December. For opening times check with each church.
While on tour, Prism Arts will offer engaging workshops for members of the community. The creative results from these sessions will be brought together and returned to the cathedral in the summer of 2024.
The workshop at Crosby Ravensworth has already taken place, but the Kirkby Stephen event is on 6th November and Appleby’s on 4th December.
The Rev Canon Benjamin Carter, canon warden at Carlisle Cathedral, said: “We are delighted to be taking Rest Under The Stars on tour and it is a really exciting to engage with the parishes of Crosby Ravensworth, Kirkby Stephen and Appleby.
“We hope the local community come and enjoy the experience, and, if you do, please remember to fill in one of our feedback postcards — this helps us greatly with our planning for the future.”
Support for Rest Under The Stars has been received from Hayward Tod, Cumbria Community Foundation, and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
